Review
This is the final weekend of the Encounters International Documentary Film Festival. This year marked the first time in more than a decade that the festival — which usually takes place in Cape Town and Johannesburg — also hosted screenings in Pretoria, with the Ster-Kinekor at Brooklyn Mall serving as the venue.
Other cinemas screening the festival’s documentaries include:
Cape Town: Labia, Ster-Kinekor V&A Waterfront, Bertha Mowbray, and Bertha Khayelitsha. Johannesburg: The Bioscope, Rosebank Nouveau, Ster-Kinekor Sandton, Ster-Kinekor Southgate.

Semi-soeter – Babies, Big Misunderstandings and Buffoonery
Semi-Soeter reunites Jaci and JP in a fun, fast-paced Afrikaans romantic comedy filled with baby-themed chaos, awkward parenting moments, and hilarious twists. Featuring standout performances by Anel Alexander, Nico Panagio, Neels van Jaarsveld, and Diaan Lawrenson, the film blends slapstick humour with heartfelt themes of trust and family. While its American-style comedy might not appeal to all, strong local flavour, a catchy Afrikaans soundtrack, and gorgeous visuals rooted in South African settings make Semi-Soeter a must-watch for fans of feel-good local films.
