Bloedhond – Delightfully scary entertainment for Halloween month
Review
With Halloween just around the corner, it’s almost time for a delicious horror movie marathon. But you don’t have to reach only for old favourites like The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Scream (1996) and The Ring (2002). Afrikaans has now also taken its seat at the scare-table with Bloedhond (2024), available on eVOD (eTV’s free streaming service).
Rian van Heerden is a master opportunist and a producer who pushes boundaries in Afrikaans. Think of the reality series Real Housewives van Pretoria and Tarzan van George, as well as the documentary series Sex in Afrikaans and Tiek Tok Boom! Most of Rian’s productions have stirred up conversation, and Bloedhond is certainly no exception.
The story revolves around five hormone-fuelled Gen Zs travelling to a music festival, but when they accidentally take a wrong turn and get lost, the chaos begins. Yes, if it sounds vaguely familiar: the resemblance to the Wrong Turn films is obvious, and inspiration is clearly drawn from these and other classic American horror films. Yet, as Mark Twain said: “There is no such thing as a new idea… We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope.” Through Twain’s lens, Rian and his team manage to give a tried-and-tested recipe a fresh South African and Afrikaans twist.
